Joico K-PAK Hair Repair System for Curls
The reason I use, love and recommend the Joico K-PAK Hair Repair System for curls so much, is because of the keratin, protein and amino acids. Protein gives the hair the strength and structure to not only define a curl, but to hold it there. Keratin is a protective protein found naturally in hair, that repairs and strengthens the hair by replacing lost proteins. There’s also Rosehip Oil, which helps add softness and shine to the cuticle layer. But even if your hair isn’t coloured or damaged, the Joico K-PAK Hair Repair System is still incredible for wavy and curly hair because it’s a line of salon-quality, protein rich, cuticle sealing and smoothing products.
So if you’ve got high porosity or over-moisturized hair. If it’s damaged from years of heat styling tools and colour or chemical treatments. If your hair is falling flat, limp and lifeless with little to no volume or definition. Or if your hair can’t hold a curl for long after washday, and your waves and curls are loosening and dropping out. UV Protection from Sun Damage
From thousands of Curl Clinics and clients around the world, and my own experience. I’ve found that people with fine hair, waves and curls need to increase the amount of protein in their hair care products during the Summer. This is because studies have shown that UV damage, caused by sun exposure, damages the hair’s cuticle and breaks down the protein in the hair. Causing limp, lifeless hair that lacks shine. And dry, brittle hair that’s more prone to frizz, split ends and breakage. Especially at the ends or around the crown and halo of the hair that naturally gets more sun exposure.
Studies have shown that people with thick hair have more natural resilience against UV damage than those with fine hair. And people with virgin hair or darker hair experience less damage from UV exposure that those with bleached or highlighted hair. Your hair is also more fragile and more prone to sun damage if you have thin hair. So to combat all the effects of UV damage to the hair, especially during the Summer months. I recommend using the Joico K-PAK Hair Repair System regularly in your hair care routine. Which has been formulated with UV protection from sun damage.
Step 1: Clarifying Shampoo
Step 1 is the Joico K-PAK Clarifying Shampoo – a deeply detoxifying shampoo that removes product buildup and impurities such as chlorine, limescale, metal and mineral deposits. I recommend using it at least once/month, but more often if you swim. See my 10 Summer Haircare Tips for more advice on how often to clarify your hair depending on how often you swim. Step 2: Cuticle Sealer
Step 2, is the Joico K-PAK Cuticle Sealer – available on Amazon. It smooths and tightens the cuticle to lock in curl pattern and colour. Full of peptides and protein, vital to maintaining healthy hair. UV damage from sun exposure, heat damage from styling tools, colour and chemical treatments all cause damage to the hair cuticle. Altering the structure and porosity of the hair. This is the magic product that seals and smooths the cuticle back down. Apply the Cuticle Sealer to damp hair, leave in for 5 mins and then rinse out fully. Avoid contact with the scalp, as the pH neutralizer can cause irritation.
Step 3: Reconstructor
Step 3 is the hero product of the Joico K-PAK Hair Repair System and is the multi award-winning Joico K-PAK Reconstructor. Packed with amino acids and protein, essential and beneficial to the hair structure. This potent protein treatment rebuilds, strengthens, and fortifies damaged hair and improves elasticity. Apply to damp hair and leave in for at least 5 mins then rinse out fully. You can leave it in for longer. But I’d recommend doing it gradually over a few washdays, and not leaving it longer than 30 mins max.

If your hair is over moisturized or lacking protein, you can use the Joico K-PAK Reconstructor once/week. I’d highly recommend getting the one litre bottle. It’s much more cost effective for a product that you’re going to use regularly in your hair routine.
Step 4: Intense Hydrator
Step 4 is the Joico K-PAK Intense Hydrator. Where the Reconstructor focused on amino acids and protein to give the hair strength. The Intense Hydrator focuses on moisture and intense hydration. As well as sealing the cuticle and adding shine, although it’s not protein-free. This may be a little heavy for some. But if your hair feels dry no matter what conditioner or hair mask you use, or how much you use. Then you’ll love the the Intense Hydrator as it’s specifically formulated for extra-dry, over-processed hair.
Especially if you use it with the Curl Maven Thermal Heat Cap to boost the benefits of the Intense Hydrator. Which instantly replenishes moisture and hydration, boosts shine, seals the cuticle and improves elasticity. Apply the K-PAK Intense Hydrator to damp hair. Leave in up to 5 minutes, or 20-30 mins if you’re using a Thermal Heat Cap. But don’t rinse out fully if your hair feels dry, especially at the ends.
Leave in Treatment: Liquid Reconstructor
This is my second favourite product in the Joico K-PAK Hair Repair System for Curls. The Joico K-PAK Liquid Reconstructor Spray is a lightweight leave in treatment that’s a lighter version of the K-PAK Reconstructor. The Liquid Reconstructor Spray was specifically designed for fine, fragile, damaged hair, and can be used more regularly too. A potent cocktail of amino acids and smart keratin technology that repairs and strengthens damaged hair as soon as it’s applied. Apply liberally to wet or damp hair, brush through and style as usual. You can use this every washday, and it’s great as a first step when refreshing in between washdays as well.
However, Joico have confirmed that this product is being discontinued in the USA. I’m waiting to find out if it’s also being discontinued in other territories like the UK + EU, and I’ll update this article when I know more. I don’t know why it’s being discontinued, as it was only launched a few years ago, and it’s an amazing product! But it’s still available on LOOKFANTASTIC.
