  1. Thanks, this is all really helpful. I just purchased the two Treluxe products you recommended and plan to try them this weekend. Do you ever use hairspray? Or what are the finishing products that you use when hair is dry?

Hey! Sometimes I use hairspray, but not all the time. If I do, I always apply them to wet hair as my last styling product either just before I start diffusing, or half way through the diffusing process. Just to boost the hold of the hair. But it depends on what you’re wanting the hairspray to do…

  2. Hello Gabriella, this post is sooo helpful. I would love to know your typical wash day styling product layers. Do you typically start with the Treluxe serum, then Pantene mousse or Flora & Curl foam and then the Treluxe gel?

Hello! What is the big difference between the Joico Deep Penetrating Reconstructor and the hairfinity amino mask? I know they both have protein in them but do they have different benefits to them? I have medium length, 2C/3A/3B medium density highlighted hair. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I always find so much great info in all of your posts so thank you!

Hey Nina! Thanks so much. The Joico DPR is a much more potent protein treatment, with less moisturizing ingredients in it and it’s a salon professional product. The Hairfinity Strenthening Amino Masque wasn’t designed for salon professional use, and is more moisturizing, and not quite as potent with the protein. You could use the Hairfinity mask instead of your conditioner, you couldn’t do that with the Joico. It’s a treatment, not a mask or conditioner, and you wouldn’t use the both of them during the same washday. But both are perfectly safe to use regularly at home. I really hope that helps and all makes sense.

Great this is very helpful! I have both products and do notice the hairfinity is more moisturizing. After I use the Joico wow my curls are poppin, especially when I’m in need of some protein! Do you use the hairfinity as part of you moisture treatment to keep a moisture protein balance or do you recommend a different mask/treatment that has no protein in it? Thanks again for all your help!

If you’re looking for a treatment that is more for moisture, then I recommend the Phyto Joba Moisturizing Mask, that is mentioned in this blog. It’s hydrating but not heavy on the hair. It has the perfect balance of moisture and protein.
It’s available worldwide at LOOKFANTASTIC with 20% off using code CURLMAVEN.

I am having such a hard time with my hair! I used to have coils growing up and now it gets very flat with half curls. I tend to have stringy curls, especially towards the ends of my hair. I need help! Are there any cheaper brands that you recommend? Any that you would stay away from?

    1. Gabriella says:

Sure, stay away from Shea Moisture, Cantu, Not Your Mother’s Nature and some great budget friendly brands are Giovanni, Flora & Curl – CURLMAVEN for 20% off at Look Fantastic, or MopTop – CURLMAVEN for 10% off but only available in the USA.

OMG, I’m not using enough product!! The amounts to use is sooooo helpful, thank you. I have shoulder length hair and only use 1 or 2 pumps of teh Floracurl foam or Pantene mousse. Likewise I use maybe a 10c size amount of Boucleme gel.

    1. Gabriella says:

oh my, unless you have really, really fine hair density, I would say that’s not nearly enough! Try using more and let me know how you get on x

  6. Sheena Beierman says:

I love the trelux serum but fine the HI Definition gel is too moisturizing for my waves. My hair loves protein. Any recommendations on how to get it to work better?

    1. Gabriella says:

I would recommend regular protein treatments (there’s lots of suggestions on my Protein Moisture Balance blog post, or use protein drops to boost the protein levels in your TrèLuxe Hi! Definition Gel. Suggestions include Aphogee 2 Step Protein Treatment Step 1, Bouclème Protein Booster Drops – CURLMAVEN for 20% off at Look Fantastic, or 15% off on the Bouclème webiste. Hope that helps x
